Liverdun was drawn during Whistler's etching tour of the Rhineland between 14 August and 7 October 1858. It dates from early in the trip, possibly in the second half of August. Other scenes etched on this trip include The Unsafe Tenement 018 and Street at Saverne 014.
Liverdun was published in Douze eaux-fortes d'après Nature (Twelve Etchings from Nature, the 'French Set') in November 1858.
