The bevelled copper plate bears the maker's oval stamp 'R. MAZARINE / 35 / E. GEORGE / A. PARIS'. It is one of two plates known to have come from this maker and the only plate of this size. It was drawn on but never bitten, nor was it cancelled. The other Mazarine plate was also unfinished (A man standing, facing front 377).
The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death in 1903, and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935.
