The copper plate bears the maker's stamp, 'RUE MAZARINE 35 / E. GEORGES / A PARIS'. Only one other plate is known to have come from this maker, A young woman with a fan 376.
It is not the same size as the other known Mazarine plate. It is close in size to several other plates including Nut Shop, St James's Place, Houndsditch 356, The Visitors' Boat 303, Château de Verneuil, Touraine 408, Greengrocer's Shop, Paris 471, Little Terrace, Luxembourg Gardens 443.
The plate of A man standing, facing front was in Whistler's studio at his death in 1903, and was given by Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) to the University of Glasgow in 1935. The ground was partly removed but the plate was not obviously cancelled, though it is unfinished.
