TECHNIQUE
This is an etching, with fine detail, deeply etched in the foreground and more lightly drawn in the background. There are numerous lighter lines, and scrape marks, the remnants of an earlier composition, across the surface.
PRINTING
It is likely that only one or two proofs were printed, probably in 1888 immediately after the Whistlers returned from their honeymoon. There is only one known impression of each of the two states, both printed in black ink. The first is inscribed 'First proof. abrasion afterward removed' ().
