A three-quarter length study of a man with a beard, standing turned to the right, with head bent, and reading a journal.

Stéphane Mallarmé (1842-1898); the drypoint may have been intended as a possible frontispiece for Vers et Prose . 5 Mallarmé posed to Whistler for Stéphane Mallarmé 462, and for two lithographs, Stéphane Mallarmé, No. 2 c059 and Stéphane Mallarmé c060.
