The copper plate is the same size as The Steps, Amsterdam 452 and Bridge, Amsterdam 447, which date from 1889, and close in size to two earlier etchings, The Barber's Shop, Chelsea 263 and Justice Walk, Chelsea 441 of 1887.
The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958). Miss Philip gave the plate to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line across the lower left corner.
