TITLE

Whistler's original title is not known. The etching has usually been known by one title, as in the following examples:

'Place Daumont' (1897, Wunderlich's). 1
'Place Daumont' (1902, Edward Guthrie Kennedy (1849-1932)). 2

However, 'Place Daumont, Tours', adding the name of the town, is the preferred title.

1: Wunderlich's to Whistler, [August 1897], GUW 07289.

2: Kennedy 1902[more] (cat. no. 326).

DESCRIPTION

On the right side of a street curving in the distance to left is a row of three- and four-storey houses. The word 'VIEUX' is seen on the side wall of the third house on the right. On the left side of the street is a house with an awning and a balcony on the third floor. In the middle of the street is a covered horse-drawn cart. People walk along the pavements. In the foreground the street broadens out, and there are two children standing in the middle, with, to right of them, a dog and a small market-booth with a woman seated at it. Inscribed 'Place Daumont' (faintly) at bottom left.

SITE

The Place d'Aumont, in the town of Tours, France, is just off the Place des Halles with its covered market. The name of the site is inscribed faintly as 'Place Daumont' on the copper plate.
