The copper plate has the marker's oval stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' It is the same maker and size as The Barber's Shop, Chelsea [263] and The Steps, Amsterdam [452].
The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death in 1903 and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line at right.
