In 1861 Whistler was asked to illustrate two poems in Passages from Modern English Poets. Whistler wrote to Arthur James Lewis (1824-1901):
'Can't find anything among my old plates that will do for your work - but will at once begin, and finish two small etchings as I promised'. 9

9: Whistler to A. J. Lewis, [November 1861?], GUW #02138.

The copper plate has not been located. It was exactly the same size as Sketching [83] and close to The Miser [17].
