SALES & COLLECTORS

Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) may have inherited all five impressions from Whistler: she kept the first and fifth impressions, which were bequeathed by her to the University of Glasgow, 1958 (Graphic with a link to impression #K4410103, Graphic with a link to impression #K4410201). Harold Wright (1885-1961) of Colnaghi's in London listed and annotated items from the Whistler estate for Miss Philip, and took some 'duplicates' for sale. This may be where Margaret Selkirk Watson Parker (1867-1936) bought an impression, which is annotated by Wright (Graphic with a link to impression #K4410105). Two other collectors acquired impressions of this rare drypoint, Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) (Graphic with a link to impression #K4410102) and Harris G. Whittemore (d. ca 1937) (Graphic with a link to impression #K4410104). These three American collectors acquired the second, third and fourth impressions respectively.
