The copper plate has no maker's mark. It was similar in size to a number of plates including Price's Candle Factory [166], Lindsey Houses [161], Rag Shop, Milman's Row, Chelsea [329] and Merton Villa, Chelsea [381]. It may have been cancelled very lightly with crossed diagonal lines.
The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935.
