The copper plate bears the maker's oval stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' It is the same size as a number of other plates by the same makers including Bead Stringers [235] and Quiet Canal [224]. This means that the plate was brought from London to Venice by Whistler to fulfil the Fine Art Society's commission.
However, it was published by Messrs Dowdeswell and Thibaudeau with A Set of Twenty-six Etchings (the 'Second Venice Set') in 1886. It was cancelled in 1887 with deep diagonal crossed lines over the whole image.
The copper plate is now in the Art Institute of Chicago. 8
