EXHIBITIONS

It was not exhibited in Whistler's lifetime. In fact it was never exhibited, as far as is known, before 1931, when Lessing Julius Rosenwald (1891-1971) showed his impression in Philadelphia (Graphic with a link to impression #K3890103). 7

SALES & COLLECTORS

On 6 April 1891 Whistler sold the first proof of 'Market Women Loches' together with an impression of 'Market Women Turkeys' to H. Wunderlich & Co. of New York for £6.6.0 and £3.3.0 respectively. 8 Wunderlich's stock books record that 'Market Women Loches' was sold a year later, in 1892 possibly to John Caldwell (fl. 1887-1907). 9 Later the same etching was sold through Knoedler's, and eventually bought by Lessing Julius Rosenwald (1891-1971), who gave it to the National Gallery of Art in 1943 (Graphic with a link to impression #K3890103).

Meanwhile 'Market Women Turkeys' was probably bought by Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) (Graphic with a link to impression #K3860102). 10

The purchases from Whistler in 1891 and sold by Wunderlich's in 1891/1892 included impressions of 'Market Women Turkeys' and 'Theatre Loches' (Stock no. a 19706) bought by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) (Graphic with a link to impression #K3870103) and 'Nocturne Palaces' (Stock no. a 17889), bought by Horatio Greenough Curtis (d. ca 1923), Boston (Graphic with a link to impression #K2020804). Freer also bought an impression of Market Women, Loches from Frederick Keppel (1845-1912) on 12 June 1913 (Graphic with a link to impression #K3890102).
