EXHIBITIONS

Place Daumont, Tours was extremely rare and was not exhibited in Whistler's lifetime. It was however shown after his death, at the Grolier Club in New York in 1904 and at the Whistler Memorial Exhibition in London in 1905. 4

4: New York 1904a (cat. no. 363); London Mem. 1905 (cat. no. 326).

SALES & COLLECTORS

In 1897 it was listed among etchings 'on hand' by H. Wunderlich & Co., New York, but with no price given. Whistler definitely sold an impression to Wunderlich's in 1899, for £6.6.0. 5 It is likely that both the known impressions came through Wunderlich's. Although no stock number is recorded, 'No 8' and '15' are written on the verso of one, possibly by Whistler (Graphic with a link to impression #K3690104), suggesting it was among a large group of impressions sent to an American dealer. One impression was owned by Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) and later by Harris G. Whittemore (d. ca 1937) and by Claude Wampler (1895), who gave it to Syracuse University Art Galleries (Graphic with a link to impression #K3690104). The other came from the Estate of George Hammond, Southern California, and is now in Colby College, Maine (Graphic with a link to impression #K3690102).
