EXHIBITIONS

Rag Shop, St Martin's Lane was rare and very rarely exhibited, being shown twice by the print dealers H. Wunderlich & Co. in New York, in 1898 (probably Graphic with a link to impression #K2820104) and 1903. 8

After Whistler's death, an impression was exhibited in the comprehensive exhibition at the Grolier Club in New York in 1904. 9

9: New York 1904a (cat. no. 315).

SALES & COLLECTORS

Whistler sold one impression of 'St Martin's Lane (Rag[)]' to H. Wunderlich & Co. for £8.8.0 on 29 June 1888. 10 This may have been the impression acquired by Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) (Graphic with a link to impression #K2820104), which was later sold through A. A. Hahlo & Co., New York, to Harris G. Whittemore (d. ca 1937), and finally bought through the Pennell Fund by the Library of Congress.

10: GUW #13052

Two impressions were in Whistler's studio at his death. One was sold by his executrix, Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) to Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) in 1903 (Graphic with a link to impression #K2820102), and the other she bequeathed to the University of Glasgow in 1958 (Graphic with a link to impression #K2820103).
