Provenance:Plate bequeathed by Whistler to his executrix, Miss Rosalind Birnie Philip, 1903; printed for her by Nathaniel Sparks (1880-1956), Bristol, 1931; this impression bequeathed by her to the University of Glasgow, 1958.

Print tone:There is a medium, uneven print tone, that is darkest at the upper edge, above the door and in the upper corners. The seated figure of the woman with the child is wiped cleanly.  
Note on foul biting:There is an area of foul biting at the lower edge and the grip mark from a tool at the right side. There is individual pitting around the doorway and pitting affecting the etched lines at the feet of the seated woman.  
Print note:There are wipe marks near the edges and a mottled effect from wiping in the foreground and on the doorway, suggesting the grain of the wood and adding texture to the ground. There is very minor reticulation of ink at the left side. The ink shows through to the verso.
