Bunting

1887
Etching and drypoint on laid paper
K.324 (2, undescribed by Kennedy)
The Whistler Estate, bequeathed by Rosalind Birnie Philip, 1958
Hunterian Art Gallery, GLAHA 46934

Kennedy recorded only one state of this vivid etching of fluttering flags, and sailors watching the Naval Review, but the project has identified at least three. Five impressions were printed by 19 August 1887, and next day Whistler sold one to the dealer Thomas McLean for £8.8.0.1. Few further sales were recorded, and Miss Birnie Philip inherited eight impressions, of which six are in the Hunterian.
