Back in London, Whistler kept changing the figures. 'I believe they will come out far more beautifully than ever!' he wrote in 1889, 'I am making of them wonderful new states!!' 1.

Several proofs in Glasgow come from intermediate states not previously recorded. When satisfied, Whistler trimmed the etching to the plate mark, leaving a small tab for his butterfly signature.
