J. McN. Whistler, Etchings & Drypoints, Venice, 2nd series, catalogue, pp. 8-9

1883
Glasgow University Library, Special Collections

For the exhibition of the 'Second Venice Set' at the Fine Art Society's galleries in London, Whistler designed white frames with incised black lines, and hung them in yellow and white rooms. In the catalogue he mocked the critics by including clippings from earlier press-reviews. The St James's Gazette, for instance, had asserted that 'The Little Venice is one of the slightest of the series.'
