Marchande de Vin, Ajaccio

1901
Etching on laid paper
The Whistler Estate, presented by Rosalind Birnie Philip, 1935
Hunterian Art Gallery, GLAHA 49929

Two portraits, Mère Gérard of 1858 and a Corsican wine-seller of 1901, illustrate the consistency of Whistler's choice of subject. Throughout his career he showed an intense interest in portraying the distinctive dress and characters of strong-minded old women.
