Little Smithfield probably dates from 1875.
The copper plate bears the maker's oval stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' This form of the stamp was used mainly between 1873 and 1875 (see for instance
Shipbuilder's Yard, Liverpool 142).
In subject and composition it can be compared to certain earlier etchings such as Stevens' Boat Yard 056 and later etchings such as Wych Street, London 176.
