DESCRIPTION

A broad road leads up to the quayside. The masts of six or seven fishing boats can be seen at the top of the slope. In the foreground at right are two women standing with arms crossed looking at the viewer. Several other women and children are walking to and from the quay. Along the quay there are street lamps, and on each side are buildings: on the right a three-storey building, on the left a smaller building with tall windows, possibly a market, with in front of it a small stall with people clustered about it.

SITE

The quayside of the fishing port of Ostend, Belgium, an important ferry terminal. Whistler wrote ''Fishing Quai Ostende' on one impression (). Fish Women, Ostend 349 shows a similar scene.
