DESCRIPTION

A view across a broad river, busy with small boats with sails spread or partly furled, casting reflections on the water. In the distance are two windmills and a line of trees, with a dome rising above one of the buildings to right.

SITE

A view from Papendrecht, looking across the Meerwede, with the Groothoofdspoort and the Hotel Bellevue, Dordrecht, in the distance. 5 Dordrecht, a busy port and ferry terminal on the Dutch coast, was frequently visited by Whistler. Etchings of Dordrecht include Dordrecht 259 and Little Dordrecht 260. He also painted several watercolours there between about 1882 and 1902, including Dordrecht m0876, r.: Gold and Brown: Dordrecht; v.: Dordrecht m0968, A Little Red Note: Dordrecht m0969, Note in Rose and Silver - Dordrecht m0970, Gold and grey - The Sunny Shower, Dordrecht m0973 and Grey and Green - Dordrecht m0976, and two oil paintings, Note en gris: Dordrecht y293, Bleu et argent: Dordrecht y294.
