DESCRIPTION

A young girl with wavy hair parted at the right and falling down her back stands turned toward the left, in three-quarter view, looking towards the artist. She is wearing a dark dress with a broad ruffle on the bodice, and full sleeves with a short shoulder cap. She has an apron over her short, full skirt. Only her left arm is visible, at right, holding up the skirt of her frock, so that her petticoat is just visible. She is wearing stockings and flat shoes. She is lit from the right and casts a faint shadow to the left. No background is shown.

SITTER

Whistler wrote 'Annie Haden - ' on one impression (). Her name, 'Annie' was etched on the plate in the final state, after publication in the 'French Set', and possibly to complement the portrait of her brother, Seymour 030, which also has the name added.
Annie Harriet Haden (1848-1937) was the model for Annie Haden with Books 006, Annie, Seated 032 and Annie Haden 067, and for two paintings, At the Piano y024 and Harmony in Green and Rose: The Music Room y034, which is illustrated below.
