The Sail may date from 1863, or from later in the 1860s. It is close in size to three other prints, Battersea Reach [96] and Amsterdam, from the Tolhuis [99], both of 1863, and to Draped Model [109], which has been dated to between 1869 and 1873. Given the similarity of the subject (even though it is not finished) to the Amsterdam and Thames plates, the date of 1863 is more likely.
