The copper plate bears the maker's oval stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' It is close in size to several plates including Rag Shop [380], and The Steps, Amsterdam [452].
It was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958). The plate was in good condition and she authorised Nathaniel Sparks (1880-1956) to print proofs. 9 The plate was then cancelled with a diagonal line across the lower left corner. She gave the plate to the University of Glasgow in 1935.
