The copper plate has no maker's mark. It is close in size to a number of plates dating from 1887 and 1888, most of which were made by Hughes & Kimber, including Model Stooping [362], Baby Pettigrew [374], Resting by the Stove [372] and Three studies of women's heads [400].
It was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line from the middle of the left edge to just above the bottom right corner.
