The copper plate bears the maker's oval stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.' It is close in size to a number of plates dating from 1887 and 1888 including figure studies (i.e. The Japanese Dress [371]) and townscapes (i.e. Cottage Door [252]).
The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was inherited by Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958). At least one impression was printed by Frederick Goulding (1842-1909) on 26 January 1904 (Graphic with a link to impression #K3340105). After Goulding printed it in 1904 the plate was cancelled with a diagonal line across the lower right corner. Miss Philip gave the plate to the University of Glasgow in 1935.
