The copper plate has no maker's mark, but was probably made by Hughes & Kimber. It is quite close in size to other plates dating from 1887, including Return to Tilbury [311], Windsor Castle [314], Doorway, Sandwich [323] and Doorway, Gray's Inn [289].
The plate remained in Whistler's estate at his death, and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958) who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled by a diagonal line from the centre of the left side to near the lower right corner, on the right edge.
