PRINTING

There is a detailed but not entirely clear record of printing of the 'Naval Review Set'. Five impressions of Her Majesty’s Fleet: Evening were printed by 19 August and seven on 23 August 1887, a total of twelve; in addition eight are listed on 1 September, but this may be a record of impressions still in stock. 10 By 1889 he only had one in stock. 11

Whistler may have numbered some impressions; one, for instance, bears a '(No. 4)' that may have been by Whistler (Graphic with a link to impression #K3260102) - which could be a record of printing or sale.

10: [18 August- 1 September 1887], GUW #13234.

11: [18 July 1887], GUW #13235.

Impressions were printed in dark brown ink on laid paper, including ivory (Graphic with a link to impression #K3260102, Graphic with a link to impression #K3260112); cream (Graphic with a link to impression #K3260109); 'antique' (pre-1800) with 'IV' countermark (Graphic with a link to impression #K3250103) and with 'SH' watermark (Graphic with a link to impression #K3260110). One is in black ink on ivory laid paper with a Strasbourg Lily watermark (Graphic with a link to impression #K3260111). All are trimmed to the platemark and signed on the tab with a butterfly and 'imp.' to show that Whistler printed them.
