TECHNIQUE

The first state is in pure etching, which is augmented by small runs of drypoint shading in the second state. The figures in the balconies, drawn with tiny squiggles and circles, and short, bouncy and jagged lines, look like rejoicing angels or putti.

PRINTING

Only three impressions of The Abbey Jubilee have been located. The first was printed in dark brown ink in cream laid paper (Graphic with a link to impression #K3160102); one impression of the second state was printed in black ink on buff Asian laid paper (Graphic with a link to impression #K3160202) and another in dark brown on off-white laid paper (Graphic with a link to impression #K3160203). They are all trimmed to the platemark and signed with a butterfly and 'imp.' (to show that Whistler had printed them) on the tab.
