TECHNIQUE

The plate was executed in pure etching.

PRINTING

Only a few impressions of After the Sale, Clothes Exchange, Houndsditch were printed. Most impressions are in black ink and one (Graphic with a link to impression #K2940106) in brown. Most are on laid paper, including sheets with a partial 'PRO PATRIA' watermark (Graphic with a link to impression #K2940106, Graphic with a link to impression #K2940105), ivory laid paper with a crown watermark (Graphic with a link to impression #K2940104), and buff laid paper with a coat of arms watermark (Graphic with a link to impression #K2940103). All are trimmed to the platemark and signed by Whistler with a butterfly on the tab and 'imp.' to show that he had printed them.
