TECHNIQUE
It is a drypoint, drafted at first with bold lines for the dress and background, and fine, expressive and sensitive lines for the face and hair. A complex blend of medium-length lines of shading with patches of irregular shading created a shimmering effect on the dress and curtain. However, there are acid droplets at the corners in the third state (
) and it may be that the carpet pattern was etched, and then possibly reinforced in drypoint.

There are single impressions of the first (), second () and third () states; the majority of impressions are of the foruth state. Impressions were printed in black ink on a variety of papers, including ivory Japan laid paper, two of these being on kozo (, ) and one on hosho (), as well as tan Japan (). Several are on western papers including off-white 'antique' (pre-1800) laid paper (), and pale buff laid paper with a scallop shell watermark ().
