The Young Tree dates from the summer of 1887 (it shows leaves on the tree and children sitting on the grass, suggesting a warm summer day). The butterfly signature is consistent with this date. It was exhibited in Brussels in February of the following year, and first sold on 3 May 1888. 1

It is one of the 'Grey's Inn Set', most of which were done in 1887, such as The Steps, Gray's Inn [282] and The Baby, Gray's Inn [288].

1: Brussels 1888 (cat. no. 5); Whistler to Wunderlich's, GUW #13051.
