The Clock Tower - Amboise dates from 1888. Whistler and his wife visited Amboise about the middle of October 1888, on their honeymoon. Whistler also etched Hole in the Hill, Amboise [433] and Château d'Amboise [431] there.

On the verso of a letter from Chenonceau in 1888 Whistler listed several works including 'Evening. Clocktower', which may indicate that the quiet street was drawn of an evening, but could refer to some other work. 1 Whistler also wrote to a friend:

1: Draft of letter to RBA, [14 September / 1 October 1888], GUW #05325; MacDonald 1995, cat. no. 1182.

'I have brought away something lovely from Amboise - and on my return to London will send you one of the first proofs to hang up in your diplomatic breakfast room that you may prove your intimate connection with "Elementor Kunst"' (that is, 'Fundamental Art'). 2

2: Whistler to J. Rennell Rodd, [25/30 September 1888?], GUW #05348.
