STATE

Three states are known before cancellation.

State 1

Impression: K3760104
Signed with a butterfly at lower left, to the left of the children.
The composition is basically complete.

State 2

Impression: K3760103
The children's faces are slightly changed in drypoint: the girl's hairline is lower on her forehead and her eyes and jawline are redrawn; the boy's eyes are lightly shaded and there are two short, curved lines from his cheek bone to his left ear.

State 3

Impression: K3760202
The children's faces are changed again in etching: their facial features are redrawn, and the girl's hair is changed; new shading is added to the girl's blouse and between the boy's legs; patches of vertical etched shading are added at upper left and right, on both sides of the ornate arch; considerable etched shading is added to the semi-circular frieze above the doors and to the triangular area above it.

State 3 (cancelled)

Etching: PS_K376_01 (plate)
Cancelled with one diagonal line.

No impression from the cancelled plate is known. This is a digital image based on the copper plate. 20

20: A scan of the copper plate was flipped horizontally, converted to greyscale, and colour inverted, with enhanced contrast.
