EXHIBITIONS

Tracing the history of this etching is very difficult since the title and subject are similar to several other etchings including Little Terrace, Luxembourg Gardens [443], The Little Terrace, Luxembourg Gardens, No. 2 [444], Balustrade, Luxembourg Gardens [465] and Bébés, Jardin du Luxembourg [463].

It may have been first exhibited at the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers in 1899, during Whistler's Presidency. 9 Impressions were shown by the print dealers Obach & Co. in London in 1903, and at the Whistler Memorial Exhibition in London in 1905. 10

9: London ISSPG 1899 (cat. no. 247).

10: London Obach 1903 (cat. no. 248); London Mem. 1905 (cat. no. 383).

SALES & COLLECTORS

Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) bought an impression through Whistler's sales outlet, the Company of the Butterfly, in 1902 for £12.12.0 (Graphic with a link to impression #K4290103). 11 This was bequeathed with the rest of Freer's unique collection to the Freer Gallery of Art. Mrs Herbert F. Perkins (dates unknown) also bought an impression, but when is not known; this was later given to the Art Institute of Chicago (Graphic with a link to impression #K4290102).

11: Whistler to C. L. Freer, [June 1902], GUW #09089.
