TECHNIQUE

Passages de l'Opera is almost completely etched, but there is fine drypoint shading on one figure in the group next to the tree, to the left of the passageway.

PRINTING

One impression, inscribed '1st state', was printed in black ink on ivory laid 'Pro Patria' watermarked paper. Three were printed, also in black, on ivory laid paper with a crowned 'GR' watermark, apparently taken from a book or ledger (Graphic with a link to impression #K4180102, Graphic with a link to impression #K4180103, Graphic with a link to impression #K4180104). Impressions of Quai de Montebello [385] were also printed on this paper, presumably at the same time (Graphic with a link to impression #K4170102, Graphic with a link to impression #K4170103). The paper is slightly discoloured and darkening to buff, and it is likely that another impression, on buff laid paper, but with no visible watermark, is from the same ledger (Graphic with a link to impression #K4180106). One was printed in dark brown ink on ivory 'antique' (pre-1800) laid paper with the watermark of a crown over letters (Graphic with a link to impression #K4180105).
