The copper plate bears the maker's oval stamp: 'HUGHES & KIMBER (LIMITED) / MANUFACTURERS / LONDON E.C.'
Etchings of similar small size include London subjects of around 1887 - including St James's Park [250], Wimpole Street [279], and several figure subjects such as The Fur Tippet: Miss Lenoir [365], The Japanese Dress [371] and the The Menpes Children [300] - as well as some French scenes etched in 1888, such as Theatre, Loches [418].
The plate was in Whistler's studio at his death and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. The plate was cancelled posthumously, with a diagonal line from above centre on the left edge to above the lower right corner.
