The copper plate of Rag Shop, St Martin's Lane has no maker's stamp. It is the same size as The Bucking Horse, Wild West [295] and Petite Rue des Bouchers [342], both dating from the autumn of 1887.
It was in Whistler's studio at his death, and was bequeathed to Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958), who gave it to the University of Glasgow in 1935. It was cancelled posthumously with a diagonal line across the left side of the plate.
