PRINTING

There may have been a limited print run of less than ten impressions of The Little Rag Shop, Milman's Row. '7' was written, possibly by Whistler, on one impression of the second state, and might be an indication of the number printed (Graphic with a link to impression #K2570202).
On 4 September 1887 Whistler printed three impressions of 'Rag Shop'. It may be that the second state was done at this time. Furthermore, on 18 July 1889 Whistler said that he had three proofs of 'Rag Shop Chelsea' in stock. However, in each case, he could have been referring to this etching, or Rag Shop, Milman's Row, Chelsea [329] or The Rag Shop, Milman's Row [290]. 13

13: [26 September 1887], GUW #12716; #13235.

Impressions were printed in dark brown ink with very light tone, usually on ivory laid paper (i.e. Graphic with a link to impression #K2570102, Graphic with a link to impression #K2570103) although one is on buff or browned paper (Graphic with a link to impression #K2570204). Most were trimmed to the platemark and signed on the tab with a butterfly and 'imp.' to show that Whistler had printed them, although one is trimmed but not signed on the tab (Graphic with a link to impression #K2570203) and one, where the tab appears to have been cut off, has it re-attached (Graphic with a link to impression #K2570105) .
