STATE

Four states are known before cancellation.

State 1

Impression: K1450102
There is no signature or inscription.
The composition is complete.

State 2

Impression: K1450103
The shadows of the tree at the right and in the foreground are augmented with short diagonal lines; slightly slanting lines are added to the foliage at upper left, near the left edge.

State 3

Impression: K1450303
Signed with a butterfly at right, below the centre.
The far boundary of the field is defined and the distant trees are made higher, with more trees added in the centre; a building is suggested beyond the field at left; short diagonal and zigzag shading augments the shadows in the foreground; the grass or bushes behind the near trees are enhanced and extended with diagonal shading; more clusters of leaves are added on the upper branches of the near trees and some branches have been added or redrawn.

State 4

Impression: K1450302
The distant trees have been reduced or worn down, and partly merge with several wide-spaced diagonal lines, running from left to right, which cross the right half of the plate, above the butterfly; numerous light diagonal lines are added in the lower part of the sky, at the left.

State 4 (cancelled)

Etching: PS_K145_01 (plate)
Cancelled with one diagonal line.

No impression from the cancelled plate is known. This is a digital image based on the copper plate. 8

8: A scan of the copper plate was flipped horizontally, converted to greyscale, and colour inverted, with enhanced contrast.
