The Slipper probably dates from 1859. Thomas wrote that it was 'etched in France about 1859 ... retouched in England in 1861.' 1

Similarly, Samuel Putnam Avery (1822-1904) described it - twenty years after - as 'Plate retouched and altered, 1861.' 2

Lochnan suggested it was printed in late November/December 1859, in a room newly set up with a printing press on the top floor at 62 Sloane Street, the residence of Francis Seymour Haden, Sr (1818-1910). She associated it with Auguste Delâtre, Printer [28] and The Wine Glass [38], and felt all three were influenced by Whistler's access to and study of the collection of etchings by Rembrandt Harmens van Rijn (1617-1681) owned by Haden. 3
