SALES & COLLECTORS

On 8 June 1903 an impression of this etching, recorded as 'Rue de Vannes Paris', was sold by Whistler for £10.10.0 to the London print dealer Robert Dunthorne (b. ca 1851). Whistler was very ill and died shortly after this; it is likely that this sale was recorded by Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958). 9 This impression was bought by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) (Graphic with a link to impression #K4390102) who bequeathed it to the Freer Gallery of Art in 1919.

9: [17 June 1903], GUW #13042.

Another impression was in Whistler's studio at his death and bequeathed by the artist to Miss Birnie Philip (Graphic with a link to impression #K4390103) who in her turn bequeathed it to the University of Glasgow in 1958.
The only other known impression was with P. & D. Colnaghi in the 1930s, and was bought by Margaret Selkirk Watson Parker (1867-1936), who bequeathed it to the University of Michigan Museum of Art, Ann Arbor in 1954 (Graphic with a link to impression #K4390104).
