EXHIBITIONS

It was first exhibited by H. Wunderlich & Co. in New York in 1898. An impression was lent by Bryan Lathrop (1844-1916) to the exhibition organised by the Caxton Club in Chicago in 1900 (Graphic with a link to impression #K3910102). 8

After Whistler's death it was shown at the Grolier Club in New York in 1904 and at the Whistler Memorial Exhibition in London in 1905. 9

SALES & COLLECTORS

Whistler sold an impression on 27 March 1889 to the Fine Art Society, London, for £ 4.4.0. It was No. 5 in 25 works sold. 10 '5' is written on the verso of an impression acquired by Bryan Lathrop (1844-1916) which is inscribed '1st Proof' (Graphic with a link to impression #K3910102). Whistler sold another a couple of weeks later, on 16 April 1889, to H. Wunderlich & Co. of New York for £6.6.0 less 20 percent discount. It was No. 13 in 18 works sold. 11 On 18 July 1889 Whistler recorded that he still had one impression. 12

Several years later, in 1899, Wunderlich's recorded a sale at £4.4.0 - which was, by then, a fairly low price. 13 Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) probably bought his impression from Wunderlich's, possibly in 1899; he certainly owned it by 1900 (Graphic with a link to impression #K3910103).
