'Double Doorway, Sandwich' is the generally accepted title.

It may have been called 'Church Street' by mistake, because it was near the Church of St Peter; on the other hand, this may refer to another etching, Butcher's Shop, Sandwich, Kent [320]. The reference to Lawrence Street was almost certainly a mistake, caused by confusion between this etching and yet another doorway subject, Little Steps, Chelsea [269].

To the left of centre are adjoining doors with pillars supporting a triangular pediment. The one on the right opens into a passage lit by a window at the far end. To right of these doors is a third door, which opens into a small shop, with a large many-paned shop window. Goods and a woman are just visible in the shop. In front of the window at right there is a group of three children, one reaching into a box on the pavement. The sill of a first-floor window is just visible at upper right.

St Peter Street, near the church of St Peter, in the town of Sandwich in south-east Kent, England. It shows 3-5 St Peter Street, reversed in the print as usual. The building at the right was originally the Old Town Gaol, until it was replaced in 1829. 8

Whistler etched several street scenes in Sandwich including The Cock and the Pump [321] and Salvation Army, Sandwich [319].
