TITLE

There are several minor variations on the title, by Whistler and later cataloguers, as follows:

'T. A. NASH' (1887, Whistler). 2
'Greengrocers "Nash"' (1887/1888, Whistler). 3
'Nash's Fruit Shop, Chelsea' (1889, Exposition Universelle). 4
'Nash Fruit Shop' (1890/1891, Whistler). 5
'T. A. Nash' (1899, Frederick Wedmore (1844-1921)). 6
'Nash's Fruit Shop' (1909, Howard Mansfield (1849-1938)). 7
'T. A. Nash’s Fruit-Shop' (1910, Edward Guthrie Kennedy (1849-1932)). 8
'Nash's Fruit Shop. Chelsea' (1903/1935, possibly Rosalind Birnie Philip (1873-1958)). 9

'T. A. Nash's Greengrocer's Shop' combines Whistler's original titles with later cataloguers' versions of the title.

DESCRIPTION

An awning stretches across the open front of a shop, shading wares on a counter at the right, in front of which stand several children. Beyond the counter is a woman, looking out, and by a similar counter at the left stand two children, one of whom wears a hat. Between the counters is a blank space. On the awning is written 'T. A. NASH.'

SITE

T. A. Nash's greengrocer's shop was at 6 College Street in Chelsea, London. It was one of a series of Chelsea shops etched by Whistler.
