SALES & COLLECTORS

An impression of the first state was acquired by Samuel Putnam Avery (1822-1904) (Graphic with a link to impression #K2580101). A second state from the collection of Joshua Hutchinson Hutchinson (ca 1829 - d.1891), was later acquired by Clarence Buckingham (1855-1913), and passed to the Art Institute of Chicago (Graphic with a link to impression #K2580103). Another later state came to the Institute from Bryan Lathrop (1844-1916) (Graphic with a link to impression #K2580204). George Aloysius Lucas (1824-1909) owned a third state (Graphic with a link to impression #K2580206), probably bought in the mid- to late 1880s, as did Howard Mansfield (1849-1938) (Graphic with a link to impression #K2580210), Henry Harper Benedict (1844-1935) (Graphic with a link to impression #K2580208) and Harry Brisbane Dick (1855-1916) (Graphic with a link to impression #K2580207). Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919) bought one from Messrs Obach in London on 11 July 1903 (Graphic with a link to impression #K2580205).
