Print note:There are only faint traces of drypoint shading below the front boat remain; tonal medium on the dark shaded area under the arch and laundry hanging in front of it, window to right of the arch, the figures seated at far right and the area to their left (Lalanne's 'motled tint' and/or open bite/lavis?); spots of tone similar to spit bite on the masonry to left of the arch;NB: Kennedy's description of the 9th state, 'The work in the arch is closer and has probably been rubbed down with charcoal.' For info on the use of charcoal on etching plates see Lalanne, Treatise, p.34-5. Lalanne seems to describe a different effect from the addition of tone in this state.
