Provenance:Probably acquired from Whistler by Francis Seymour Haden (1818-1910), London; bought from Hermann Wunderlich & Co., New York, (Wunderlich receipt 9 November 1898), by Charles Lang Freer (1856-1919), Detroit, MI, November 1898; bequeathed to the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, 1919.

Print note:only certain drypoint is series of broken lines that depict leftmost, curving rope (line?) extending from top of mast (stay?) to hull of second barge from front; short l-r diagonal and longer curved horizontal above it at lower left print are probably scratches in plate but may be drypoint; those lines print strongly in this impression compared to 1898.328 and 1888.31 (both state I), where the lines are weaker; in addition, faint marks from acid droplets that are visible at lower left in 1898.328 and 1888.31 are not present in this impression; other accidental scratches are present in this impression but do not appear in the others: thus this is earliest proof of the three
